A blocked drain and a vent problem can sound alike, but they often affect the fixtures differently. The plumber starts with the fixtures that share the branch, watches the toilet water level, and notes whether ordinary drainage slows or pushes water backward. Checking the vent may include accessible connections, past alterations, an air-admittance valve if one is installed, and the roof termination.
