Why does my shower valve leak only when the shower is running?

Use the exact timing and location to separate valve and riser leaks from showerhead, enclosure, base, and drain leaks.

A leak that appears only while the shower runs may come from the valve or cartridge, the pipe to the shower arm, the arm or showerhead connection, a hose, or a tub-spout diverter. It may also come from water crossing a trim opening, failed enclosure seal, shower base, drain, or tub overflow. A supply-side leak can begin as soon as the valve opens; an enclosure or drain leak usually starts after spray reaches that area. A leaking tub-spout diverter is a separate shower-mode symptom. [1]

Use a short observation, not a long leak test

  1. Dry the shower and nearby room surfaces so old water does not hide the new path.
  2. Have one person operate the controls while another watches from a dry location outside the shower.
  3. Note whether water appears at the handle or trim immediately, only after switching outlets, or only after spray hits a wall, door, curb, or drain.
  4. Watch an accessible ceiling below or back side of the wall without opening electrical equipment or standing in water. Stop at the first sign of concealed leakage.
  5. Do not repeat a long test. Once the timing identifies a likely path, more water adds damage rather than useful evidence.

Water at the trim does not prove the valve is leaking

Spray can pass around a trim opening and appear near the handle even when the valve body is sound. The reverse can happen too: a valve or riser leak can travel down the back of the wall and appear at the base. Some trim plates expose an inspection opening, but whether removal is safe depends on the valve design, water isolation, and manufacturer instructions.

  1. Identify the valve and trim

    The brand, model, cartridge, and diverter arrangement determine which service parts fit.

  2. Confirm the water path

    Run only the outlet or enclosure area needed to reproduce the symptom, then stop.

  3. Choose useful access

    An existing trim opening, rear wall, or ceiling below may reveal the path with less disturbance.

  4. Repair the layer that failed

    A valve, riser, shower arm, diverter, drain, enclosure, and waterproofing system require different repairs and sometimes different trades.

  5. Retest in stages

    Check the pressurized path first, then the outlet, enclosure, and drain only as needed. Dry the area between stages.
