Can I move a toilet, shower, or vanity during a remodel?

You may be able to move a toilet, shower, or vanity, but no room dimension or universal distance can prove it. The new position needs a workable drain and vent route, water piping, fixture clearance, support, service access, and coordination with the floor or slab. How to test the idea before approving the layout
Start with the actual fixture
Use its rough-in drawing, mounting method, connection points, clearance information, and required accessories. A generic fixture symbol cannot show whether the chosen product fits.
Trace the whole drainage path
Identify the intended trap or flange, branch connection, developed route, slope, vent arrangement, cleanout access, and existing piping that would receive the fixture. A nearby drain is not automatically an acceptable connection. [2][3]
Check the floor and surrounding space
Determine whether the room has conventional framing, engineered members, a slab, or another assembly. Do not drill, notch, or cut a structural member without the applicable design information and approval. [4]
Plan every trade boundary
Separate the plumbing route from framing, concrete, electrical, HVAC, waterproofing, tile, cabinets, glass, and finish repairs. The plumbing decision cannot assign those trades automatically.
Confirm the permit and inspection path

The route may require locating, controlled cutting, excavation, bedding, testing, and concrete restoration.
Joist direction, engineered members, beams, ducts, and a finished ceiling can block the shortest path.

A structural review may change the route or the fixture position.
The project team must identify who evaluates the slab and who restores concrete, flooring, and moisture protection.
What the approved relocation should show
The selected fixture model, final centerline or opening, finished-floor height, and required clearances.
The drain, vent, water, valve, and access route far enough to show the intended connection points.
The surface openings and structural, concrete, waterproofing, electrical, cabinet, glass, and finish work assigned to others.
