Match maintenance to the fixture or heater
- Verify the serving water source and, when it matters, the hardness at the property.
- Use the water-heater or fixture manufacturer's maintenance instructions for that model. Heating type, valves, filters, and service procedures are not interchangeable.
- Track recurring scale, reduced flow, temperature changes, and service findings instead of treating one deposit as a complete diagnosis.
- If considering treatment, compare its stated purpose, capacity, regeneration or filter needs, discharge, and maintenance against the measured goal. Water softeners primarily address calcium and magnesium hardness. [1]

A storage heater can collect sediment or scale, especially near heated surfaces. Noise, slow recovery, or reduced usable hot water can make deposits part of the inspection, but demand, controls, heating components, and tank condition also matter. Do not treat sound alone as proof of scale or a reason to replace the tank.
Tankless heaters have narrow water passages through a heat exchanger. DOE notes that scale can restrict those passages and that flushing frequency varies by manufacturer, model, use, and water quality. Decide whether hardness treatment would solve the actual problem
Measure the feed water
Use a current hardness value at the point that supplies the equipment. A city report is background; an existing softener or another device can change what reaches the heater.
Document where scale returns
Separate broad mineral buildup from one dripping faucet, one clogged aerator, or a damaged fixture finish.
Check the equipment itself
Determine whether model-approved cleaning, filter service, leak repair, or another equipment correction fits the symptom before adding whole-home treatment.
Count the continuing work
If a softener is worthwhile, include its capacity, bypass, drain, salt, settings, water use, and maintenance. Its job is hardness control, not removal of every drinking-water concern. [1] [2]
