Look at the whole reachable line, not one frame
Clean for visibility
Remove enough roots, grease, or debris to see the pipe wall and pass the camera where practical.
Record the entire reachable route
Identify material changes, joints, standing water, offsets, cracks, deformation, and connections before and after the main defect.
Locate the defect
Tie camera distance to a surface sonde mark and fixed site references.
Check grade and future connections
A repair that fixes one break but preserves a long belly, poor transition, or inaccessible connection may not solve the larger problem.
Compare restoration limits
Driveways, slabs, landscaping, fences, utilities, and interior finishes can influence where a practical repair begins and ends.

NASSCO describes camera inspection as a way to document structural and maintenance conditions, pipe material, connections, roots, grease, and debris. [1] A repair proposal should show the failed section and explain why both endpoints land in pipe that appears sound and properly aligned.
Video still has limits. Standing water may hide the bottom of the line, and the camera cannot show soil support or the outside of the pipe. Those limits should be stated instead of automatically being used to justify a larger repair.
Questions to settle before sewer work begins
- What exact defect is being repaired, and where is it located?
- What does the video show about the pipe on both sides?
- Will the repair correct grade, alignment, and material transition as well as the visible break?
- Which surfaces must be opened and who restores them?
- How will utilities, access, testing, inspection, and future cleanout access be handled?
A spot repair needs usable pipe at both ends. The replacement section must reach far enough to make reliable connections, maintain the intended grade, and leave nearby branches or cleanouts serviceable. The proposal should explain both transitions, not only the damaged section between them.
After installation, the work may need an inspection, drainage test, and camera pass through the repaired area when access allows. Keep the final video, locate information, any applicable permit or inspection record, and photos before restoration. Those records make future maintenance easier to understand.
