What is a sewer camera inspection and how does it work?

A sewer camera records the inside of the pipe where the lens can travel and see clearly. A useful inspection also records access, direction, distance, and visibility limits.

What you should receive from the inspection

  • The access point and direction of travel.
  • Approximate distance to each significant observation.
  • Video or still images clear enough to understand the finding.
  • A distinction between what is visible and what is inferred.
  • The cleaning, locating, monitoring, or repair question the observation answers.

A camera is not a pressure test, leak test, or soil investigation. It can show water entering at a visible joint, but it cannot measure leakage through a wall that looks dry. Standing water may suggest a low section, but the technician needs to watch how far the water continues and what happens after flow stops before drawing a grade conclusion.

Color and surface appearance also cannot prove how much strength remains in a corroded pipe. If the decision depends on wall thickness, soil support, or a buried connection outside the camera’s view, the report should say what remains unknown and what other evidence would answer it.
