From a button press to a cleared bowl
1. The flush valve opens
The handle or button moves a linkage that raises the flapper, canister, or other flush-valve mechanism. On a chain-operated toilet, the chain needs enough slack to let the seal close again after the flush. [2]
2. Stored water drops into the bowl
Gravity pulls tank water through the open flush valve. Bowl passages direct that short surge around the rim and, on some toilets, through a siphon jet. [1]
3. The trapway starts to siphon
The surge fills the curved trapway and pushes out air. That pressure change creates the siphon that pulls water and waste into the sanitary drain. [1]
4. The siphon ends
When the tank's discharge slows, air returns to the trapway and the siphon breaks. Water left in the bowl forms the toilet's normal trap seal. [1]
How the tank and bowl refill
The flush valve closes
The flapper loses buoyancy or the canister returns to its seat. The seal must sit cleanly and fully over the tank outlet.
The fill valve opens
As the tank level falls, the float or sensor tells the fill valve to admit supply water. [1]
The bowl gets its standing water back
The refill tube sends some incoming water to the overflow opening and into the bowl. That water replaces the bowl water lost during the flush. [2]
The fill valve shuts off
When the float reaches its set point, the valve should close. Water should not continue spilling into the overflow tube after the tank has filled. [4]
Why the overflow tube matters
During a normal refill, the small refill tube sends water to the overflow opening so the bowl regains its water seal. If tank water rises too high, the larger overflow tube also directs that water into the bowl instead of letting it spill over the tank rim. A continuous stream into the tube after filling means the water level or fill valve needs attention. [4]
Follow the toilet and fill-valve instructions for refill-tube placement. Fluidmaster warns not to push this tube down inside the overflow pipe because that setup can siphon water and make the valve cycle on and off. [2]
What common symptoms point to

What you can safely check in the tank
- Lift the tank lid with both hands and set it on a padded, stable surface.
- Flush once while watching the linkage, flush valve, waterline, fill valve, refill tube, and overflow tube.
- If the toilet refills between uses, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait without flushing. Color in the bowl points to a tank-to-bowl leak. Flush afterward to reduce staining. [4]
- Photograph the model information and existing parts before shopping. Flappers, canisters, fill valves, and seals are not universally interchangeable.
- Stop if the shutoff is stuck or if you see cracked porcelain, damaged bolts, or a leaking supply connection.
