How does a sink drain and P-trap work?

What happens when the sink drains

Why the trap keeps water

A P-trap is a shaped fitting, not a mechanical valve. Its curve leaves a standing water seal while still letting wastewater pass during use. The International Plumbing Code framework calls for liquid-seal traps and restricts designs that depend on moving parts or do not protect the seal properly. [1]

A rarely used sink can lose trap water to evaporation. A leaking trap, an improper S-shaped arrangement, a blocked vent, or other pressure disturbance can also reduce the seal. Running water into a truly unused sink may restore an evaporated seal, but odor that returns during normal use calls for inspection of the trap, vent, connections, and sink overflow channel.

Safe checks at the visible drain

  1. Remove accessible debris from the stopper and see whether flow improves.
  2. Before loosening the trap, place a basin below it and make sure no chemical cleaner, very hot water, or backed-up wastewater is present.
  3. Photograph the nuts and washers before disassembly. Slip-joint washers seal through their shape and alignment, not excessive tightening.
  4. Clean removable buildup, inspect for cracks or corrosion, and put the parts back without changing the trap's shape or slope.
  5. Run a small amount of water first. Dry each joint, then fill and drain the basin while watching every connection.
