Why the trap keeps water
A P-trap is a shaped fitting, not a mechanical valve. Its curve leaves a standing water seal while still letting wastewater pass during use. Safe checks at the visible drain
- Remove accessible debris from the stopper and see whether flow improves.
- Before loosening the trap, place a basin below it and make sure no chemical cleaner, very hot water, or backed-up wastewater is present.
- Photograph the nuts and washers before disassembly. Slip-joint washers seal through their shape and alignment, not excessive tightening.
- Clean removable buildup, inspect for cracks or corrosion, and put the parts back without changing the trap's shape or slope.
- Run a small amount of water first. Dry each joint, then fill and drain the basin while watching every connection.
