Build a repair record before deciding
Map every repair
List date, room, pipe material, failed part, cause if confirmed, and whether pipe around the defect appeared sound.
Measure pressure and flow separately
Static pressure, pressure while water is running, and actual fixture flow answer different questions. Compare them at representative locations after checking the incoming service and local restrictions.
Inspect accessible piping
Review mechanical rooms, cabinets, crawlspaces, attics, manifolds, valves, transitions, supports, and previous repair workmanship.

What a repiping scope should state
- Which hot-water, cold-water, recirculation, exterior, appliance, and fixture branches are included.
- The new pipe material, sizes, route, supports, insulation, sleeves, valves, and transition fittings.
- Where walls or ceilings will be opened, who protects the home, and what finish restoration is included.
- Whether the main shutoff, pressure regulator, fixture stops, supply connectors, hose connections, or water-heater connections are included.
- How service interruption, flushing, pressure testing, inspection, labeling, and startup will be handled.
- Which existing sections remain and how they connect to the new work.
Routine leak checks can identify problems earlier. EPA recommends inspecting accessible connections, fixtures, and water-using equipment and responding to leaks rather than letting them continue. [3] Maintenance, however, cannot restore pipe wall that is already broadly deteriorated.
The useful question is not simply “How old are the pipes?” It is “What has failed, where has it failed, what condition is exposed, and which proposed scope addresses that pattern?” A clear answer may support one repair, a partial replacement, a phased plan, or a complete repipe.
