In residential use, “slab leak” usually refers to a leak in water-distribution piping routed in or below a concrete floor. It does not describe water entering through a foundation crack, a leaking building drain, groundwater, or moisture condensing on a cool surface. Those can produce similar stains or dampness but require different tests and repairs.
Because a supply line remains pressurized when fixtures are closed, a small opening can release water continuously. Isolation and temperature behavior can help determine whether the suspected line belongs to hot- or cold-water distribution.
Narrow the route
Use plans when available, fixture relationships, acoustic information, thermal patterns, moisture mapping, and pressure behavior that fit the installation.
Confirm at access
The final repair scope should be based on the exposed failure and the condition of accessible pipe around it, not on a tool reading alone.
When repair, rerouting, or repiping may fit
- Direct access and a spot repair may fit a well-located, isolated defect when opening the floor is practical and the nearby pipe appears serviceable.
- Rerouting can bypass the failed section when direct access would cause major damage, but the new path still has to protect the pipe from freezing, structural conflicts, and difficult future service.
- Replacing a longer run or repiping part of the system deserves a separate discussion when failures repeat or exposed pipe shows a broader condition problem. One leak under the floor does not automatically justify a whole-home repipe.
Once the pipe is exposed, keep photographs of the failed point, adjacent material, routing, and completed connection. Record whether the opening was in the pipe wall, a joint, a fitting, or a damaged transition. That evidence is what supports any later claim that the failure is isolated or part of a broader pattern.
