The sink area can support filters, a membrane, tank, faucet, feed connection, and drain connection.
The owner wants treated water at multiple fixtures or appliances.
The owner wants a smaller product stream and accepts slower production plus storage.
A home may use both systems when each has a separate job. Upstream softening can reduce hardness reaching an RO unit, while the RO unit provides its certified reductions at a drinking tap. The layout still has to account for pressure, treated and untreated branches, two discharge paths, and maintenance for both products.
A home may also need neither system. If there is no measured hardness problem or named treatment goal, adding equipment creates filters, salt, drains, and service work without a clear purpose. CDC recommends identifying the substance of concern and checking the product label for that reduction. [1]
Answer these questions before choosing equipment
- What has a current water report or property test actually identified?
- Is the goal scale control, a particular drinking-water reduction, taste preference, equipment protection, or something else?
- Which fixtures need treated water, and which should remain untreated?
- Is there room and an approved drain path for regeneration or concentrate?
- Who will replace filters, add salt, check settings, sanitize components, and document service?
- What does the exact product certification claim for the named substance, and what is outside that claim? [3]
When both systems are used, the order and branch layout should be deliberate. CDC describes point-of-entry treatment as serving most or all incoming water and point-of-use treatment as serving one tap. [1] The plumbing plan should show which branches are softened, which remain untreated, what feeds the RO unit, and where the RO faucet delivers product water.
The waste streams are different. A softener periodically sends spent regenerant to its drain. RO sends concentrate to its drain while it makes product water. [2] Each connection must follow the selected equipment's instructions and the applicable plumbing requirements; one drain detail should not be copied to the other system without review.
