What is a reverse-osmosis system and how does it work?

A typical residential RO system treats water at one tap through prefilters, a membrane, storage, and final filtration. Its certified label, not the letters RO alone, identifies the reductions it has been tested to provide.

RO production is different from faucet delivery. The membrane makes product water over time, while a storage tank allows a faster short draw at the faucet.
