What the plumber checks before starting
- Confirm which fixtures are affected and where the building sewer can be accessed without damaging a fixture.
- Review pipe material, known damage, previous cable problems, chemical use, roots, and prior camera findings.

- Choose an initial head. When the obstruction is unknown, a smaller exploratory head may precede a larger cutter.
What happens during cable cleaning
Feed through the access
The operator keeps the machine close enough to support the exposed cable and advances it into the sewer.
Read the resistance
A bend, fitting, soft blockage, roots, and hard obstruction can feel different, but cable feedback is not a complete pipe inspection.
Work the obstruction
The head is advanced and withdrawn in controlled movements. The operator stops if the cable begins to wind up or the cutter stops rotating.
Retrieve and inspect
Material on the head may help identify roots, wipes, grease, or another obstruction. Damaged or worn cable is removed from service.
Verify flow
Water is introduced in a controlled way after the line opens. The test confirms drainage, not the absence of every defect.
Why plumbers use different heads

Questions to ask after flow returns
- What material was recovered?
- At what approximate distance was resistance encountered?
- Did the cable pass the same location more than once?
- Was full flow restored from the affected fixtures?
- Would a camera answer a remaining repair or maintenance question?
Cable resistance can suggest a bend, obstruction, or sudden change, but it does not create a picture of the pipe. The amount of cable outside the machine provides only an approximate distance because the cable curves through the route. A stopping point is not an excavation location without camera and locating context.
Material on the head is also only part of the story. Roots suggest an opening somewhere but do not show every joint. Grease shows what the head touched but not how much remains on the wall. The plumber should explain what is known, what is still uncertain, and whether another method would change the next decision.
