Why would a residential gas line fail a pressure test?

A failed test shows that the documented boundary did not hold under the required conditions. It does not automatically reveal the exact leak or authorize a repair method.

A residential gas line fails a pressure test when the defined test section loses the required pressure and the loss cannot be explained by the test setup or another allowed condition.   • A joint, valve, connector, cap, fitting, or damaged pipe inside the defined test boundary is leaking.
  • A temporary gauge connection, adapter, cap, hose, or another part of the test apparatus is losing pressure.

  2. Check the temporary setup

    The tester checks the gauge, adapters, caps, valves, and temporary connections so a setup problem is not mistaken for leakage in the permanent piping. [1]

  3. Protect equipment outside the test

    Appliances, regulators, and controls that are not designed for the test pressure must be disconnected or isolated as the applicable procedure requires. [1]

  4. Narrow the boundary safely

    Approved section isolation, accessible inspection, leak-detection solution, an appropriate combustible-gas instrument, or manufacturer diagnostics may be used by qualified personnel. No single tool guarantees an exact location.

  5. Repair, retest, and document
