How can water appear far away from where a pipe is leaking?

  3. Review the plumbing and building layout. Supply lines, drains, shower walls, roofs, HVAC condensate, and exterior openings may overlap in plan view.
  4. Isolate one source at a time. Controlled fixture use, branch shutoff, pressure behavior, or a dry-weather observation can make the route clearer without creating unnecessary damage.
  5. Choose a small access point where the evidence is strongest, then inspect the actual connection or pipe before defining the repair.

A point sensor confirms moisture where it is installed. A flow-monitoring device observes supplied-water patterns. EPA explains that these tools can alert to unintended moisture or irregular water use, but their detection method and location determine what they can see.
