Make the area safe before tracing the source
- Move furniture and absorbent belongings only when the surface is stable and there is no electrical risk.
- Stop the nearby shower, sink, toilet, washing machine, or dishwasher and see whether active wetting slows. Do not repeatedly run a fixture just to reproduce damage.
- If water is still spreading, use the nearest known fixture shutoff or the private main shutoff when it is dry, accessible, and turns normally.
- Photograph the boundary, then mark it lightly with removable tape. Record the time, weather, recent water use, and whether the area feels colder only while it is damp.

Evaporation can cool a damp surface, and a cold-water line can cool nearby material enough for humid air to condense. A thermal camera may show a temperature pattern, but it detects surface temperature rather than water itself. That is why temperature should be compared with moisture readings, plumbing layout, meter behavior, and timing instead of being treated as a leak locator.
EPA describes leak and flow devices as tools that can alert to unusual water use or unintended moisture. A point moisture sensor confirms water at its own location; a whole-home flow device observes supplied water. Either can miss a drain leak, exterior rain entry, or condensation because those sources may not create the expected supply-flow pattern. [2]
