Checks that make the clue more useful
- Outline the warm area at the same times on two different days. Note hot-water use, outdoor temperature, sunlight, and HVAC operation.
- During a confirmed no-use period, observe the water meter without touching its fittings. Unexpected flow increases the reason to investigate plumbing. EPA describes abnormal-flow monitoring as a way to identify possible household leakage, while noting that household patterns must still be interpreted. [2]
- Look for grout discoloration, lifted flooring, damp baseboards, mineral residue, or a nearby wall that feels damp. Do not pry up finishes to look underneath.
- Listen at a quiet time for water movement, but remember that recirculation pumps, HVAC equipment, and appliances can make similar sounds.
- Note whether hot water runs out sooner or the heater operates more often than expected. Those details help connect the floor pattern to the hot-water system.
An infrared camera displays surface-temperature differences. It may help map the shape of a warm path or reveal a temperature contrast that is not obvious by touch. It cannot see through concrete, name the pipe, or distinguish a sound pipe from leaking hot-water piping without supporting evidence.
Moisture meters, meter observations, isolation of hot and cold branches, pressure behavior, and the known plumbing layout answer different questions. EPA's leak-detection guidance distinguishes flow monitoring from point moisture sensing; neither tool is universal. - Whether the water meter moves during a confirmed no-use period and whether isolating the water heater changes that movement.
- Any recent flooring, appliance, HVAC, plumbing, or radiant-heating work near the area.
- Photographs or a simple floor plan showing how the warm boundary changes over time.
