How a tank heats and replaces water
Cold water enters low in the tank
The cold-water connection feeds a dip tube that carries incoming water toward the lower portion of the vessel. Keeping the colder replacement water low helps preserve a hotter layer near the outlet rather than immediately mixing the entire tank to one lukewarm temperature. [1]
The heater starts warming the tank
When stored water cools below the control setting, a gas model starts its burner sequence or an electric model energizes a heating element. The controls are different, but both systems transfer heat into the stored water. [3]
Hot water leaves from the top
Opening a hot tap lets pressure in the plumbing system push the hottest available water through the upper outlet. The same draw admits replacement cold water. The useful quantity delivered in the first hour depends on stored volume, starting temperature, and how quickly the heater can recover. [1]
The tank reheats and waits
After the draw ends, the burner or elements continue until the control is satisfied. Insulation slows, but does not eliminate, standby heat loss. The heater cycles again when stored water cools even if no one has opened a tap. [3]
What the main parts do
- The steel vessel and insulation hold heated water and limit standby loss.
- The dip tube directs replacement cold water down; a damaged tube can mix cold water into the usable hot layer too soon.
- The burner and flue on many gas models, or the upper and lower elements on many electric models, supply heat in different ways. [1]
- The thermostat or gas control decides when to heat. It does not measure temperature at every tap, so long piping runs and fixture mixing still affect what the user feels.
- The sacrificial anode helps protect the steel tank from corrosion, while the drain valve provides a service connection for manufacturer-directed maintenance. [2]
- The temperature-and-pressure relief valve is a safety device, not a routine drain or a leak to cap.
How gas and electric tank heaters differ

A burner heats the bottom of the vessel and combustion products travel through an approved venting path. Safe operation depends on fuel supply, combustion air, and venting. [5]
One or more resistance elements heat water inside the vessel. Controls and wiring remain behind covers and may still be energized even when the heater is not actively heating.
A burner sound and warm vent may be normal during a heating call; soot, exhaust odor, rollout, or a carbon-monoxide alarm is not. [5]
A quiet heating cycle is common. A tripped breaker, exposed wiring, or water at an access panel calls for electrical isolation by a qualified person.
