Why does my water temperature keep changing?

Four timing patterns and what they suggest

  • Hot at first, then steadily cooler: a storage tank may be exhausting usable heat, or a tankless heater may be exceeding its temperature-rise capacity.

  • Unpredictably hotter than the selected temperature: stop use and evaluate the thermostat, gas control, element control, or mixing protection rather than testing with your hand.

Observations that help without opening equipment

  1. Name the affected fixtures

    Write down whether the kitchen, lavatories, tubs, and showers all change or whether the symptom belongs to one outlet.

  2. Separate flow from temperature

    Note whether the stream becomes weaker at the same moment it changes temperature. A flow restriction can alter mixing and tankless activation.

  3. Note competing demand

    Record what other hot or cold fixtures, appliances, or recirculation schedules are active when the swing occurs.

  4. Preserve heater information

    Photograph only the exterior model label and visible display from a dry location. A tankless code or a storage control status can direct model-specific testing.

A useful test compares three points in the same event: the heater's visible operating status, the temperature leaving the heater, and the temperature at the affected fixture. Stable heater output with a changing shower points downstream. A changing heater outlet across several fixtures points toward generation, capacity, or a central mixing component.
